Got writer’s block?

Struggling to come up with ideas?

The Laurel’s own Fiction Editor Alicia Maxwell came up with this list of writing prompts to get you started!

  • Letter/poem to your future self.
  • You’re having the best day of your life. What does it look like? What are you?
  • You woke up one morning in a bedroom with no memory of who you are. You head downstairs finding someone making breakfast and you try making your presence known. Inching closer, they turn around, walking through you.
  • Find an image (of anything) and write about it. Try to bring the image to life.
  • Random Word Generator (or 20 words from a random text) and write a poem.
  • ODE or Anti-ODE poem on anything you want it to be (i.e., socks, cat, cake, person).
  • Take a random picture of a place and using editing tools, change the mood of the photo completely (ex: if you take a picture of an empty low-lit room and it expresses boredom, edit it so that it expresses happiness or darkness).
  • You win the lottery, so you decide to treat yourself to a fancy va-cay.
  • You’re trapped in a time loop on your birthday, how do you escape?
  • An hour into the escape room, you get the feeling something isn’t right.
  • You’re sitting on a log by the fire watching your friends enjoy themselves. You decide to go for a short walk into the woods. You make your way back around after a few minutes to find it empty. Where did your friends go? Who else is here with you?

If any of these prompts gave you a good idea for your creative writing, share it with us at laurel@sbu.edu!
